“Teardrop” by Lolawolf (Zoë Kravitz) from Tenderness (2020)
A song that sounds like it could be written and produced by Prince, this song from Zoë Kravitz’s band Lolawolf features another famous musical daughter, Miley Cyrus (daughter of Billy Ray). It’s a space-aged track that moves in many directions and showcases the daughter of Lenny Kravitz, who is both famous actor and musical artist, as a talent not to be taken lightly. It’s a sticky pop hit that’s as indie as it is commercial. And on the track, Zoë sings,
I won’t tell you one more time
I’m not trying to make you mine
Fall in love and you love when it’s done
You fall in love and you love when it’s done
Who is she and what’s her name?
They all start to look the same
Fall in love and you love when it’s done
You fall in love and you love when it’s done
“Trigger” by The Pink Slips (Grace McKagan) from Trigger EP (2018)
This noir rock song from The Pink Slips, fronted by Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan’s daughter Grace, is like a barrage of sonic bullets to the brain. A standalone single, the track shows the proverbial apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Grace is captivating and compelling. She is not candy-coated. Rather, she is drenched in viscous oil and unafraid to wrap her arms around you and say, THIS IS ROCK! On the tune, she sings,
There’s only one way to stay clean
And you trigger me
There’s only one way to stay clean
And you trigger me
Cause I came then I came to and now I come to believe
Steps 1 2 3
There’s only one way to stay clean
And you trigger me
“Lights Out” by Lisa Marie Presley from To Whom It May Concern (2003)
The daughter of Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie hit the musical landscape in 2003 with her debut studio LP To Whom It May Concern. And “Lights Out” was the record’s debut single. The track talks about the graves of Presley family members at the family estate known as Graceland. A rootsy rock hit, which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, the tune announced Lisa Marie as the next one in the family to earn success on stage. On the offering, she sings,
You were a million miles behind
And I was crying every time I’d leave you
Then I didn’t want to see you
I still keep my watch two hours behind
Someone turned the lights out there in Memphis
Ooh, that’s where my family’s buried and gone (gone)
Oh yeah
Last time I was there I noticed a space left
Oh, next to them there in Memphis, yeah
In the damn back lawn
