Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Showrunner Teases ‘Classic Comic-Book Style’ Visuals

Jeff Trammel knows Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has big animated boots to fill.

“Everything in the series is 3D animation. We work in a CG pipeline but managed to find a way to achieve the 2D look of that classic comic-book style that was such an inspiration for us,” Trammell told Animation Magazine in a conversation about Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man series and giving the cartoon its own distinct identity. Praising their collaborations with animation studios Polygon Pictures and Taipei, he added, “We actually chose Polygon as our partners due to their 2D look development. As fans of their previous work, we knew they could help us zero in on the style we wanted but also keep the characters feeling alive and real, without feeling stiff and mechanical.”

Sony’s Most Disappointing Spider-Man Universe Movies, Ranked

The Sony Spider-Man Universe has had many bombs critically and financially, but which are the most disappointing entries of the franchise?

While Spider-Man previously appeared in 3D cartoons like MTV’s Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, a bigger struggle for Trammell and his team was finding an aesthetic that wouldn’t draw immediate Spider-Verse comparisons. As he pointed out, “The Spider-Verse films are so incredible and convey so many different styles that it was honestly a little tough to find one that allowed us to visually separate ourselves until we really decided to lean in on that classic early comic-book era Spider-Man style. Looking at John Romita and Steve Ditko as inspiration then being able to modernize that style thanks to artists like our lead character designer, Leo Romero, allowed us to really plant our flag in a style that feels like a moving comic book.”

…we really decided to lean in on that classic early comic-book era Spider-Man style.

Friendly Neighborhood‘s story, despite following Peter Parker’s early months as Spider-Man, will also take place in a non-MCU reality, with key distinctions in Peter’s high school life including his friendship with Runaways‘ Nico Minoru and having Norman Osborn as a mentor.

Beyond the Spider-Verse Is Also on the Way

The third Spider-Verse movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, will be overseen by co-directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson but, due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, its new release date has yet to be announced. Details also remain ambiguous about Beyond the Spider-Verse‘s story which, according to actor Bryan Tyree Henry, will ensure “There’s not going to be a dry eye in the house.”

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
