How Did We Choose The Best Sustainable Men’s Clothing

Which men’s clothing brand is the most sustainable? How do we differentiate truly sustainable brands from those that are only posing for the planet?

There’s no set roadmap to sustainable fashion but to help us separate clean clothes from dirty laundry, we’ve put together a set of criteria which takes a holistic view of their business:.

Certifications: Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), OEKO-TEX®, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Fair Trade Certified™, Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA), SimpliZero, Global Recycling Standard (GRS), Climate Neutral, Regenerative Organic CertifiedTM (ROC), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), ZQ Merino, Organic Content Standard (OCS), bluesign®, Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), Fair Labor Association (FLA)

Fabrics & Materials:

We like to see sustainable materials rather than virgin synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon.

Natural materials such as cotton and hemp are biodegradable, but it’s only good news if it’s organic and free from toxic dyes. Animal-derived natural fibers like wool are acceptable as long as they’re ethically sourced.

In some cases, recycled synthetic materials help keep waste materials like plastic in circulation.

The most sustainable brands that use ECONYL and other recycled synthetics adopt end-of-life schemes to help close the loop so they don’t end up in landfill or back in the ocean again.

Carbon Goals & Achievements:

The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions. It’s not enough for sustainable bands to offset their footprint.

We want to see eco-friendly men’s clothing brands take an active role in reducing their eco-impact in all areas of their business.

Sourcing & Supply Chain:

All ethical clothing companies for men should work with ethical partners throughout the supply chain. It’s a non-negotiable.

Transparency is the first step towards accountability. Brands should also conduct regular audits to ensure all factories adhere to strict ethical standards.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion:

Men’s sustainable fashion shouldn’t be reserved for the few. We want to see ethical brands be inclusive with their sizing and price points.

Pay It Forward:

Supporting charities isn’t essential to a sustainable brand as we know it can be costly. Still, it’s nice to see brands take an active interest in social and environmental initiatives.

Closing Thoughts On The Best Ethical Men’s Clothing

Whether you’re a guy who loves your clothes or you prefer to have a select few pieces that last, the clothing you wear has a big impact.

Many men’s clothes are made using cheap synthetic fibers which are dependent on fossil fuels. The production of synthetic fibers like polyester currently accounts for ‘1.35% of global oil consumption.’

By 2030, it’s estimated that synthetic fibers will grow from 69% to 73% of total global fiber production.

At the end of their lifecycle, garments made from synthetics end up rotting away in landfills and polluting the environment with microplastics.

Curbing fast fashion isn’t all down to the consumer but one way to make a dent in it is to choose men’s ethical clothing brands who are choosing a different path.

Another way is by spreading awareness that these brands exist and sharing this article.
